After Pearl Harbor, where the US lost a good chunk of it's fleet, the Government set up a special program called Plant Patrol when they realized only two Steel Companys had facilities that could replace the decking and guns used on our largest Navy ships. They were US Steel and Bethlehem Steel and this bike belonged to the latter. On the sides of the tank you can faintly see "Plant Patrol" and on the front fender there is a # 4. They were intended to patrol the yard against Nazi sabotage and the riders were armed with a sidearm and a small solid brass fire extinguisher. Mine is still full.
